In many traditional holistic systems, especially Ayurveda, as well as in conventional Eastern European medicine, shilajit has a prominent place as the supreme healing substance. Shilajit is the most famous name for the substance known in English as mineral pitch for human consumption or mineral pitch for short. Other cultures use different names for Shilajit. The most common are Mumie (or Mumijo), Salajeet, Shilajitu or Bragshun. In this article, we will use the names interchangeably and all will refer to the same substance.
Many ancient texts mention Shilajit and Mumie as a very effective substance for health. The most famous text, Charaka Samhita, is a foundation of Ayurvedic medicine. Charaka Samhita translated as “Compendium of Charaka” puts Salajeet in a superior position compared to many other herbal formulations. It would be a mistake to think that Salajeet is a purely Indian or Himalayan substance.
Major figures in the history of medicine have used this substance. Avicenna is the most famous physician of antiquity to have used, described and theorized on the genesis of mineral pitch in nature. Antiquity works in several languages: Arabic, ancient Persian, Chinese and Sanskrit, as well as more recent works in many European languages describe the harvesting, processing and application of the mummy. Traditionally, the substance was used not only to cure multiple ailments and improve general health, but also in combination with other herbal formulations to increase their effectiveness.
Shilajit is in high demand; its powerful health-giving properties are well established through thousands of years of use by traditional practitioners. Today, most products sold on the American market under the name “shilajit” are imitations of the real mineral pitch. The shape of a product is one of the clues to its authenticity. Imitation shilajit usually comes in the form of a powder. In addition to powders, imitations are also sold in the form of pills and tinctures. The many beneficial properties of shilajit have been known to mankind for centuries. Traditionally, practitioners used the mummy to treat and prevent many different ailments, as well as to tone and strengthen the body.
