Why a Shilajit Gummy Cannot Be Purity-Tested

Shilajit purity is established by laboratory analysis of the extract itself — fulvic acid content, a heavy metals panel, microbial limits, and ash content measured on an ash-free basis. In a gummy, the shilajit is a minor fraction of total mass. A result reported on the finished gummy says little about what's inside it.

What "Purity" Means in Laboratory Terms

Purity is not a single number. A shilajit certificate of analysis reports on four things, and each answers a different question.

Fulvic acid content is the standard marker of shilajit identity and concentration. It is what distinguishes a genuine extract from a diluted or synthetic one, and it is the figure a "3,000 mg" or "top 1%" claim should be able to trace back to.

A heavy metals panel covers lead, arsenic, cadmium, and mercury as a baseline. Shilajit forms geologically over centuries in mineral-rich rock, so trace metal uptake is a known variable in the raw material, not a defect specific to any one brand. A 2025 study in BMC Chemistry went a step further and quantified thallium — a metal not routinely screened for in most commercial panels — across several shilajit products and supplements, finding measurable levels in more than one sample. The finding does not establish that any particular product is unsafe; it establishes that a panel limited to the four most common metals can miss a fifth one entirely.

Microbial limits cover total aerobic count, yeast and mold, and screens for specific organisms such as E. coli and Salmonella. This matters more for a gummy than for a resin, because a gummy's moisture content and sugar base are a more favorable environment for microbial growth during storage.

Ash content on an ash-free basis isolates the organic humic and fulvic fraction from residual mineral salts, so that a potency figure isn't inflated by material that isn't shilajit at all. The reference method for this measurement, ISO 19822, was developed for fertilizers and soil conditioners and has since been adopted by testing laboratories as the standard technique for quantifying humic and fulvic fractions across humic-substance products generally, shilajit included.

None of these four tests substitute for the others. A product can pass a heavy metals panel and still contain almost no fulvic acid. A "third-party tested" label doesn't specify which of the four was run.

Why the Gummy Matrix Breaks the Measurement

A gummy's mass is mostly sugar or corn syrup, a gelling agent such as gelatin or pectin, an acidity regulator, and flavoring. Shilajit extract is added into that base in a small quantity relative to the whole.

This creates a specific problem for testing. If a lab runs a heavy metals panel or a fulvic acid assay on the finished, blended gummy, the result is a measurement of the whole matrix — sugar and gelling agent included — not of the shilajit fraction in isolation. A percentage reported on a finished gummy and a percentage reported on a resin are not the same kind of number, even when both are labeled "fulvic acid content," because the denominator is different. Comparing the two directly is comparing a diluted figure to an undiluted one.

The only way to make a meaningful purity claim about the shilajit in a gummy is to test the extract before it goes into the gummy base, and then disclose how much of that tested extract the finished product actually contains. Skipping either step — testing only the finished blend, or not disclosing the dilution ratio — produces a number that is technically real and practically uninformative.

The Documents That Would Resolve It

Two certificates would answer the question completely: one for the shilajit extract as supplied to the manufacturer, before it is blended into anything, and one for the finished, packaged product, tested at the batch level it was actually produced in.

In practice, gummy products rarely carry either. When a certificate exists at all, it is often the supplier's certificate for the raw extract — useful, but silent on what happened to that extract once it was diluted, heated, and combined with acidic ingredients during production. A finished-product certificate, tied to the specific lot on the shelf, is far less common.

How to Read a Certificate of Analysis in Sixty Seconds

A certificate is only as useful as what it discloses. Five things to check, in order:

  1. What was tested. A heavy metals report is not a potency report, and neither is a microbial report. A genuine COA names the analyte panel explicitly — it doesn't just say "tested."
  2. Who tested it. Look for the testing laboratory's name and its accreditation, typically ISO/IEC 17025. A lab affiliated with or owned by the brand is not third-party testing, regardless of how the label describes it.
  3. What sample it covers. Every legitimate COA references a specific batch or lot number and a test date. A certificate with no lot number could describe any run the company has ever produced.
  4. The specification against the result. A real COA shows both the allowable threshold — for heavy metals, typically referenced against USP <2232> limits — and the measured value, side by side. "Pass" alone, without the number behind it, tells you nothing.
  5. Whether it matches what's in hand. The lot number on the certificate should match the lot number printed on the package. If it doesn't, the certificate describes a different batch than the one being sold.

Batch Identity: Does the Certificate Match What You're Holding

Shilajit is a variable natural material. Fulvic acid content, mineral profile, and trace metal levels shift from one extraction lot to the next, because the source material itself varies by altitude, season, and deposit. A certificate from a prior production run — even a recent one — does not guarantee the same numbers for the batch currently on shelf.

This is the gap a lot number closes. A certificate without one is not verifying the product a reader is about to buy; it is verifying a product the company made at some point.

Five Questions to Ask Any Seller, in Any Format

  • Is this certificate for the finished product, or for the raw shilajit extract before it was formulated?
  • What batch or lot number does it correspond to, and does that match the lot printed on my package?
  • Which laboratory performed the testing, and is it accredited independently of your company?
  • Does the panel cover heavy metals, microbial limits, and fulvic acid content, or only one of the three?
  • Can you provide a current certificate for the lot I'm buying, rather than a certificate from an earlier production run?

A seller who can answer all five without hesitation has documentation. A seller who can answer only the first has a certificate, which is not the same thing.

FAQ

Can shilajit gummies be fake? Yes, in the sense that matters most: a product can be labeled as containing shilajit while delivering little to no verified fulvic acid content, because the raw material is not always independently confirmed before or after formulation. "Fake" here usually doesn't mean an empty gummy — it means an unverified one.

How can gummy quality be verified? By requesting the documents described above: a certificate for the extract itself, a certificate for the finished batch, and confirmation that the lot numbers match what's on the shelf. Absent that, quality is a claim rather than a verified fact.

Is a certificate of analysis required by law? Under DSHEA, dietary supplement manufacturers must follow current Good Manufacturing Practice requirements, which include identity testing and contamination controls at the manufacturing level. They do not require a brand to make a full, batch-specific certificate of analysis publicly available to consumers. Publishing one is a voluntary standard some brands hold themselves to beyond the legal floor — not a universal requirement.

What does "third-party tested" actually mean? On its own, it means an outside laboratory performed some test on some sample at some point. It does not specify which panel was run, whether the sample was the finished product or a raw ingredient, or whether the results correspond to the batch currently for sale. The phrase is accurate and, without the documentation behind it, close to meaningless.
