Shilajit gummies can produce two different kinds of adverse effects, and they have two different causes. One set comes from shilajit itself, and is dose-dependent and reasonably well documented in small trials. The other comes from the gummy — its sugar, sugar alcohols, gelling agent, and dyes. A safety question that treats these as one thing answers neither well.
Effects Attributable to Shilajit Itself
The most commonly reported effects are mild and transient: nausea, diarrhea, and stomach discomfort, along with headache, sore throat, and dizziness. Cleveland Clinic's review of the available research describes shilajit as relatively safe when taken as directed, while noting that the evidence base is thin — few clinical trials exist, most are small, and post-marketing surveillance of supplement side effects is rare in general.
The trial data that does exist is generally reassuring at studied doses. An exploratory trial of native Himalayan shilajit at 250 mg daily for 49 days recorded a single Grade 2 adverse event — gastrointestinal irritation that resolved within 24 hours without discontinuation — across 80 participants. A separate 8-week trial of standardized shilajit at 250 mg and 500 mg daily reported no serious adverse events. A 90-day trial at 250 mg twice daily likewise recorded none in the active group. It's worth being specific about what these numbers do and don't cover: the doses studied are often lower than what some commercial products claim per serving, so a trial's safety record at 250–500 mg daily doesn't automatically extend to a product formulated at several times that amount.
Two effects are worth flagging on their own. First, several controlled trials have reported measurable increases in testosterone in men taking standardized shilajit — one recent trial recorded increases in both free and total testosterone over 90 days. That data comes from male trial populations at specific doses; Cleveland Clinic notes that in women, a hormonal shift in this direction could plausibly show up as acne, irregular periods, or hair loss, though this is a extrapolation from the mechanism rather than a finding from a trial in women. Second, a single case study has documented pseudohyperaldosteronism — a complication involving high blood pressure, low potassium, and metabolic alkalosis — associated with shilajit use. One case does not establish a rate of occurrence, but it is a data point worth knowing about.

Who Should Avoid Shilajit Entirely
Iron overload conditions. Hemochromatosis, thalassemia, and sickle cell disease all involve impaired iron regulation. Because shilajit contains iron and increases absorption of iron from other sources, it's a consistent contraindication across the safety literature for anyone with these conditions or a family history of them.
Elevated uric acid. The evidence here is genuinely mixed. Some research describes shilajit as having a neutral or favorable relationship with uric acid metabolism; other sources flag that its mineral and fulvic acid content could theoretically affect purine handling. Neither position is backed by a large controlled trial in people with gout or hyperuricemia. Given that gap, the standard and reasonable position is caution: anyone with a history of gout or elevated uric acid should talk to a physician and monitor levels before starting, rather than assume either the risk or the benefit.
Pregnancy and lactation. There is no meaningful clinical safety data for shilajit use during pregnancy or breastfeeding. In the absence of that data, the standard recommendation across both traditional Ayurvedic sources and modern safety guides is avoidance, not "probably fine."
Active infection. This one is more traditional than clinical. Ayurvedic practice generally does not introduce Rasayana (rejuvenative) preparations, shilajit included, during acute febrile illness or active infection — the reasoning is that the body's resources should go toward the acute process first. Modern sources add a theoretical layer to this: shilajit's immune-modulating effects are not fully characterized, and their behavior during an active infection is unpredictable rather than disproven. This is a caution grounded in traditional practice and an open mechanistic question, not a documented adverse outcome.
Effects Attributable to Unpurified or Untested Material
A separate category of adverse effects has nothing to do with shilajit's own physiology and everything to do with what else is in the material. Shilajit forms geologically over centuries in mineral-rich rock, which means raw, unpurified exudate can carry heavy metals — lead, arsenic, cadmium, and mercury are the four most commonly screened for, and a 2025 study in BMC Chemistry found thallium, a metal outside that standard panel, in more than one commercial shilajit product. Raw material can also carry mycotoxins from fungal activity and general microbial contamination picked up before purification.
This is the category a certificate of analysis is built to address, and what a real one needs to show — the right panel, an accredited lab, and a lot number that matches what's on the shelf — is covered in detail elsewhere. What's worth stating plainly here: a passing heavy metals and microbial panel rules out contamination in the tested batch. It says nothing about the two other categories on this page — shilajit's own dose-dependent effects, or the gummy matrix discussed next.
Effects Attributable to the Gummy Matrix Specifically
A gummy introduces its own set of considerations that have nothing to do with shilajit.
Added sugar. A gummy serving carries meaningful sugar or corn syrup by design, which matters for anyone managing blood glucose.
Sugar alcohols. Many "sugar-free" gummies substitute sorbitol, maltitol, or xylitol. These are poorly absorbed in the gut, and the FDA requires a laxative-effect warning on any product containing sorbitol or mannitol above defined thresholds — commonly cited tolerance ranges put the onset of GI symptoms like bloating, gas, and diarrhea somewhere in the 10–40 gram range depending on the specific sugar alcohol and the person.
Acidity regulators. Citric acid and similar additives are generally recognized as safe, but frequent exposure is a known contributor to dental enamel erosion, and can aggravate reflux in people prone to it.
Gelatin and dyes. Gelatin is derived from bovine, porcine, or occasionally fish collagen, and true IgE-mediated gelatin allergy, while rare, is documented in the medical literature — including reports of near-fatal anaphylaxis from a gelatin-containing capsule, and cross-reactivity with alpha-gal syndrome (mammalian meat allergy). Artificial colors, particularly azo dyes like tartrazine, are separately associated with pseudo-allergic reactions in sensitive individuals, especially those with aspirin sensitivity or chronic hives. One instructive case report describes a child who had two anaphylactic reactions after eating gummy bears; after testing, the culprit turned out to be "natural and artificial flavors" rather than the gelatin initially suspected. The point isn't that any one ingredient is the likely cause — it's that a reaction to "the gummy" could come from several different places in the matrix, none of which involve shilajit at all.
What Laboratory Testing Does Not Establish
A certificate of analysis, done correctly, establishes that a specific batch of material is free of the heavy metals and microbial contaminants it was tested for. That's a real and useful thing to know, and it's the one claim a COA can actually support.
It does not establish that an individual will tolerate shilajit's own dose-dependent effects — iron loading, blood pressure changes, hormonal shifts — at the amount in a given product. It does not establish anything about the gummy matrix, since sugar alcohols, gelatin, and dyes aren't shilajit contaminants and wouldn't appear on a shilajit contamination panel. And it does not establish safety at doses higher than what's actually been studied in a clinical trial. These are three separate questions. A contamination-focused certificate answers one of them.
Signals That Warrant Stopping and Consulting a Clinician
- Hives, swelling of the lips, face, or throat, or difficulty breathing — treat as an emergency and seek immediate medical care.
- GI symptoms that are severe or don't settle after the first few uses, rather than mild and transient.
- New fatigue, joint pain, or abdominal discomfort that develops over weeks of continued use, which can be early signals of iron accumulation.
- New or worsening acne, irregular periods, or other signs of hormonal shift.
- Lightheadedness or fainting, particularly for anyone on blood pressure medication.
FAQ
Are shilajit gummies safe? For most healthy adults without the contraindications above, shilajit at the doses studied in small trials has a reasonable safety record. The gummy format adds a separate, independent set of considerations — sugar alcohols, gelatin, dyes — that have nothing to do with shilajit's own safety profile and need to be evaluated on their own.
What's the difference between shilajit side effects and shilajit gummy side effects? Shilajit side effects are dose-dependent and tied to its own physiology — GI upset, dizziness, iron interaction. Gummy-specific side effects come from the delivery format itself and would occur with or without shilajit in the formula.
